Thanks for the input sailor.

I guess I could have stacked two exposures, one for the water and one for the snow etc.

I paid out quite a lot of money for HiTech hard grads set of 3 and a 10 stop ND filter. They're worse than useless with their colour cast. I can't recommend one that works, but I can recommend staying away from HiTech

great information on ND filters.
I have a Nader Variable filter for my Nikon D700 for my 77 mm lenses - Unfortunately there always is a vignetting around the edges of the photograph.

Is there anyway to avoid this?

Sue

Do you have the filter stacked on another filter Sue? A common mistake is to put an ND or a polarizing filter on top of a UV filter.

ND and Polarizing filters are perfect examples of "You get what you pay for". I wish I could get the money I spent on garbage filters back. I could sure use that money.....

With the exception of two B&W screw on filters in my bag I use Singh Ray for everything. Quality company with top notch product and customer service. They're also based out of Fl so getting product or assistance is quick and straightforward.

Here is their video covering different filters and some of their field uses:

I had my polarizer plus the ND Filter -

One time I only had the Fader - there was vignetting as well

Hi.

I recently bought an ND filter and I found it to be invaluable! It got me climbing into streams, wading into rivers... I purchased the Hoya HMC ND X400 for 47 (UK). I have put a couple photographs on my Facebook page under 'landscapes' so you can have a look if you are interested. I am still learning to master it, but I am pretty pleased with the results!

Hopefully this link works. If not I am on Facebook under hannahfelicityphotography.

I have only ever used this ND filter, but I can tell you I am not disappointed...my feet got very wet and cold though!
