Default Help with pricing

I have a job comming up and would like some input on pricing. The client wants me to shoot 50 action shots and he wants to pick the ten best. This is for a magazine article on Martial Arts technique. The market is a mid sized mid western city, Springfield Missouri.

How does the client want to use the photos?

National, regional, local magazine with how many in circulation? One time use, rights for how long, buy out? Cover or inside spread? These are all things you need to know to competently price the usage or sale of any images.

I think it's a small circulation national magazine. No cover shots. Unlimited use on the photos, he's buying the jpegs (or whatever format he wants)

So it's an editorial use for a magazine article that will appear once? Instead of selling the photos as a buy-out. Keep the copyright ownership and sell him the usage rights for a one-time publication, specifying the magazine's name. You'll also need paid model releases from any people in the photos.

Editorial doesn't pay as much as some other commercial uses but I would guess that you should be able to sell the images for a single editorial use at $50 apiece.

Check out the ASMP for more information about licensing, copyright ownership, work-for-hire, usage fees etc.

Thanks Brooks!!
I was thinking along the same lines, my initial thought was $300 - $500.
I wi'll definitely look into the model releases and licensing
