Speed up Windows startup

Posted 07-11-2010 at 03:31 PM by JDArt

You can speed up the time it take Windows to start by controlling which applications load at startup. Hold down the Windows key and tap the letter "R" to open the Run dialog box. Type "msconfig," without the quotation marks, and press Enter. In the resulting System Configuration dialog box, click the Startup tab, and uncheck any application you can do without.

Unlike in previous versions, it's not easy to figure out how to create a restore point manually, however.

To do so, first ensure that System Restore is turned on. Open the Start menu, and type "system." Click the System entry under Control Panel. From within the System dialog box, click...

Taking the Places bar to new places

In Windows 2000, a new feature was added to the Open and Save As common dialogs: the Places bar. It's a vertical button bar at the left-hand side of the dialogs, giving quick access to five standard locations: History, Desktop, My Documents, My Computer, and My Network Places.
