Default Bald Eagle: Angel Wings?

The state of Iowa was named for the Ioway Indian tribe that at one point in time controlled all the land between the Missouri River and the Mississippi Rivers. The Ioway tribe considered the Bald Eagles to be sacred birds. It was thought by them that the spirit of the dead were transported to after-life hunting grounds on the wings of these great raptors. The stars in the night sky were the campfires of the spirits marking their progress to their heavenly destination. It is litttle wonder that the Indians would beinpressed by these birds who were able to soar effortlessly 10,000 feet high in the sky

The photo of this Bald Eagle pose reminded me of "angel wings" and the connection to the Ioway's beliefs. Looks can be deceiving as one glances at this Bald Eagle photo. In reality these birds stand about 36 inches tall. Their wing span usually runs between 72 to 96 inches. Ninty-six inches would be the equivalent of an adult male extending both arms out and holding a ruler in each hand. Until you see Bald Eagle up close, it is easy to be deceived about how large they really are.
