Really like the Kestrel shots but I'm not too sure about the edit on the last one. Must be me because I see the three previous posts all like #3 the best.

#2 is my fav. You are very lucky to get your lens on a kestrel!

I like all three kestrel from the scene setting wide view then the increasing close-ups. The first two though are a little too "bulls-eyed" for my taste.

I'm probably overly sensitive because almost all my shots start with subject dead centered due to using a small centered auto focus spot. Occasionally I'll pre-focus, hold, then re-frame but only for a static or slow moving subject. For birds I center 'em blast away and take care of composition later.

Framing and cropping is always my first step in editing. If a subject is looking outward or flying I give it some extra space on that side so it doesn't feel like it's looking or going to fly off the page. I usually go by feel but do have in the back of my mind things like the compositional "rule of thirds" when I offset the main subject. If there are some other sort of fore and/or background elements I try to work those into the overall composition. In that case sometimes the subject is centered but it doesn't have the snapshooter's dead center "bulls-eye" look.

Of course if YOU like a centered subject that's just fine too. All I do is to blabber opinion.

I'd have offset the bluebird shot a bit more too. But HEY I DO LIKE the panorama look very much. I also like the color match of the female bluebird's breast feathers against the orange-ish background.

It got started when I thought I ought to practice framing for HD video so I set my camera for 16:9. I found out most of the time I don't like that so I went back to 4:3 and started framing and cropping for "wide screen" in Photoshop. It's become an obsession as most everything is getting 16:9 now. I've got quite a collection of hummer stills that I plan to someday add to HD 1280x720 video for a presentation so that's one way I justify it.

anywaaay ... THANKS for sharing you great shots ... and I hope my babble isn't too distracting.

Mark

That's a beautiful Kestrel! They are some of the most fun birds to handle.
