Default 3 Day of Vacation (long)

About a month ago I planned a visit to the Mississippi river to watch the baldies. I picked Dam 18 because at this time last year there were over a hundred bald eagles observed there.

How disappointing, we pulled up and there were a hundred gulls flying about and NO baldies. We sat there for about 5 or 10 min and turned around and plotted a course home. (too much star trek as a child) We did spot 1 in a field at a great distance. #1 (a sever crop) and a juv. flying over.

Today we went out again and shot this swan at a nearby pond. #2

Lucky for me someone must be feeding the mallards at this pond. Next a series of portraits shot out the car window.

Next we went south about 30 miles and hit a couple of parks. Not much stirring but I did run across this woodpecker

I went to the website for Jasper-Pulaski Park and there were 13,000 sandies there and that calls for another road trip. We arrived at the park and there were NONE in the park. There were however many hundreds in the surrounding area in the farmer's fields.

The standard (bad) luck for a birder, Gil

John

The DNR post the numbers on this site (towards the bottom of the page)

DNR: Sandhill Cranes During Their Fall Migration

I think normally they are gone by now and peak in Mid November. It must be warmer this year and thats also why the baldies have not come south yet out west.
