Default Awful shot of a rare bird... White Hawk!

For the past few weeks, my father has told me about some sort of white hawk around where he lives. Got over there today and had no luck spotting it.. We spent the day out shooting and when the sun finally hid behind the clouds, we decided to call it a day and go home. Just as we were approaching his property, I saw a white spot in a far off tree.. After a few long distant shots just to see if it was in fact a white bird, decided to get closer. Wasn't able to sneak up too close before it took flight.. cracked of a few shots, but the sunless, grey skies and far distance made it near impossible... but here it is

Best I can tell it is a Leucistic Red-Tail or Red-Shouldered Hawk... Really interesting to see. Talking to local hunter, he said it has been seen in area every winter for about 4 years now... so hopefully I'll have better opportunities

Considering conditions Bill it's a GREAT shot. Do hope you get some better opportunities as it sure is unusual and worthy of some extra effort. Maybe "Santa" could even be talked in to coming up with a new lens to meet the challenge.

Hi Bill, its good you managed to get a record shot, I hope you can find the bird again and get closer and with better light to work with.

Too bad about the light, Bill - but it is a decent shot nonetheless.

I had never seen one of these before.

Good find Bill and good shot in the circumstances. Hopefully you'll get some better opportunities.

Pretty good luck to go out looking for an individual bird and come home with a pic! I would say youve done well. My hit rate with hawks is probably less than 10%.

I have never seen a white hawk so this is wonderful to see! I hope you get more shots in the future. It is a very special sighting. Do you think this would be considered an albino?

Debi - Since I've been learning about birds and birding I think the term used for albino is "Leucistic" as Bill mentions. Wiki has more info.
