Neat shot.. and I can almost hear him thinking that out loud ..

Do you shoot in RAW? Looks like there is still plenty of detail in the feathers that you may be able to bring out with some exposure comp.. I played with the JPEG and with just a few level adjustments:

Hey Bill.....
Thanks so much for the comment...Your question, do I shoot raw....No, for the fun bird hunts and shots, I just shoot L Fine Jpg...I have been playing with ev's and getting some good results with that...Especially with the white herons and swans...They are so big and all that white on a sunny day is a killer, so I play with settings...I probably should start shooting raw though...I have ps cs3, ps elements, and ps lightroom just sitting there waiting for me to do something...I do shoot raw with wedding portraits and family shoots I do on the side, so I am not totally in the dark with it...OK, I will start shooting raw....You should be a used car salesman...hahahaha....Just kidding...I will give it a try and see....Thanks for the nudge....
I can see where your edit did bring out more detail...Thanks....

It has to be RAW no matter what i shoot, you do have much more control over the image and its needed when shooting any bird thats are Black/white, or a combination of both colours.

Best regards Paul

Thank you all for the comments and the advise...I will give RAW a try and see where it takes me...My only reservation is that jpg is so easy...99% of my shots I just do a resize for upload to sites...No post processing involved...
Darrell.....this guy did not catch lunch while I was there...5 minutes after this shot, I changed bushes to hide behind and stepped on a big a$$ stick and when it broke, he was gone....I hate it when that happens... But as you can see, he hasn't missed to many fish in his attempts...The boy is on the plump side....
