My son took this...

It's about the only way I can ever get a picture of me and my husband, I'm not so great with the timer and getting a good expression. This is the image straight out of the camera. Anyone willing to give it a go? I am all out of ideas on what to do with it.

Here's a go. I used a skin smoothing filter and enhanced the shadows a bit.

JD...
Ohhhh, now I like that skin-smoothing filter! ;)

I wasn't sure where would be a good point to crop... should the skin on my left arm be completely cropped out?

Not sure. I'm no cropping expert.

In my opinion it should, as it distracts a lot. If I am not sure about cropping I just put my hands in front of the screen :) But maybe your head gets a bit too close to the border, then just clone it out.

Selective sharpening and contrast seem to be the issues to me

Or maybe this is the key. Blurred background and shortened dof

Here's my attempt... I added a warming filter, slight diffuse glow... and to be honest, I don't know what else... I was just playing around with things until it looked good to me! (sorry, still getting used to Photoshop! so I "play around" with it a lot... I get some cool effects and then can't remember how to do it again... kinda sucks, actually!)

I thought the background and shadows were too distracting so I eleminated them and added a nice oval frame, just to finish it off:
