Default Number 2

This is a picture of my wife and youngest son. We are dropping him off at camp (1st timer). The picture isn't great but I want something for keepsake and this needs some major improvement.
Thanks
Mark

You've got a fair amount of overexposure in the shot. There's really no way to correct that (the totally blown out parts) because editing software has nothing to work with. Truthfully, with these types of shots, I find converting to black-and-white often helps. The BW seems to draw attention away from the overexposure, or at least gives the photo an "old photo" look, so viewers are less critical?

Thanks JD, I kinda figured that the highlights were too blown. As far as Converting to black and white... All I know is the decrease hue and saturation technique. What other tichniques are there.
Thanks, mark

This won't stand close inspection, but might make a usable snapshot. I fiddled with levels and curves, and then painted in some missing color.

Lisa, Thanks. I think you did a nice job, even for "just fiddling"

Aside from what Lisa did, I'd warm up the shot by adjusting color balance. Skin tones, in particular, could be much better.

dc2,
Did you post a pic? If you did I can't see it.

I ran shadows/highlights out of habit, but there wasn't anything to work with, so it mostly just darkened the image. I converted the LAB color and ran a gaussian blur of radius 5 in the a and b channels out of habit to smooth any funky color aberrations/color noise introduced from messing with the image. Then, I reconverted to RGB mode and converted to black-and-white using channel mixer (70% red, 15% green, 15% blue).

Personally, I've used blown highlights in black-and-white images for a different look, but it doesn't always work. Your mileage will vary, but it's a way to try and save blown images by giving them a new lease on life.
