Good shots and it is interesting learning about how this all happens. I agree it makes me wonder about the future though

Thanks for looking, Rust. I appreciate your comments.

The truth is that while landfills are a necessary evil, we couldn't do without them. If operated correctly, a landfill should last for years and years. With all the new regulations that DEQ (Dept of Environmental Quality) comes up with, there is less contamination of ground water, less vector (birds, insects, etc) problems, and even the odor problems are not as severe as they were at one time.

American's, as a rule, are the worst throw away society on earth, and as a result our landfills take in an enormous amount of garbage and trash. Our landfill takes in approx 42,000 tons of waste annually. Compared to large metropolitan areas, this is child's play.

When I went to school for my operators license, the landfill we toured as an example of how one should be run, took in over 6 thousand tons in one day!

Now, with more of an emphases on recycling, there is a small, but steady, decline in the amount of trash that actually goes into the fill.
Hopefully, in years to come, we can reduce this even more.

As that old song suggests, "Teach your children well". They will be the answer to most of these problems.

Very true, Pete, but there has to be a way for these homes to get that gas. Here, a few years ago, they had a study on what we could do with all our methane from the fill. Turns out...nothing! There are no businesses, homes, universities, or other consumers that would use the gas even if it was available. Plus they is no economically feasible way to deliver that gas to them if they could use it.

Isn't that the same thing they said about natural gas? And, electric cars?I hope they come up with something. It is a waste to let it all go. Even if it is to power some of the big companies. It will at least take some of the streess off the power companies. During the cold snap we just had, the local power company was asking everyone to cut back on consumption so it does not overload the system.

You are so right, Pete! Still, it all boils down to the almighty dollar! Sickening, but true!

Day 12 1-12-2014

A day off again. My rotation gives me a three day weekend! So, that said, I decided to cook a Boston butt for dinner tonight.

Also took a short drive on the creek to see if anything jumped out and begged to be shot.

#1...Small Falls on South River

#2...Winter Leaves Hanging On

#3...Old School Bus Beside Irish Creek

#4...Boston Butt Before Cooking
I forgot to put my rub on the sides, so had to redo it before cooking. I swear, I got to thinking of the shot and forgot.

#5...Boston Butt After Cooking

#6...Plated!
