This is a simple trick. In my motel room in Seattle I placed the chair in front of the window and lit the room with only one small lamp about 10' behind camera. I then set the shutter and time to properly expose the scene outside the window

shutter 8 seconds
ISO 200
Aperture F22
35mm-70mm F4 lens

I then corrected the room light with a single off camera flash set to rear sync (so it would flash the last instant of the exposure)

I then set the self timer and started the 8 second exposure, at 4 seconds of the exposure I quickly walked into frame and sat down and held still for the last 2 seconds and the flash lit me just enough to allow the existing exposed room to show through
