Texture: Democracy
As all fellow Canadians will know, today was the 41st Canadian General Election. My image for today is a segue to my soapbox. While it is obviously one of my macro texture series, it has a meaning to people worldwide.

Recent events in the middle east should make those of us living in free, democratic nations feel the responsibility and opportunity that democracy gives us. While people elsewhere are dying in the attempt to give others this privilege, we seem to ignore it. For instance, the last general election had a voter turnout of an abysmal 58%. I don't have numbers for today's election, but all I can do is hope that more people will take the few minutes needed to help determine the future of their country.

I want to take this opportunity to encourage everyone worldwide to cherish the freedoms you have, whatever those freedoms may be. If you live in a country which allows you to elect your government officials, please take that opportunity and use it to the fullest! Become aware of the current issues, and vote according to your conscience.
I agree with that wholeheartedly, my friend.

BTW - I really like the family portrait.

OK, it has been far too long since I last posted here; I have kept up my 365 project, though!

Here are some of my recent ones (this time with a focus on nature / wildlife):

Woodpecker
Went for a walk in Fish Creek with Monica and Maija. We heard this bird long before we saw it. The first shots were with the sun behind it, and looked horrible, but by moving around to get better light I was able to get a good shot.

300/4 + 1.4TC stopped down 1.5 stops.

Weed?
After a week and a half of solid rain, and two days of sunshine, the city's plants are thriving. A common sight is vast expanses of yellow - dandelions. This is a hillside within an offleash area that I saw on the way to work today. After returning home, I made a brief expedition to capture what I had previously seen. I am quite happy with the results.

Shot with the Tokina 12-24/4 at f/11.

Big Chief Mountain
I was down in Hillspring, AB today to help with the 50th wedding anniversary of our friends' parents. On the way home I got this shot.

Red-Winged Blackbird
I was out looking for eagles at the Southland offleash area. No sign of eagles, but I did see some of these guys. Quite friendly and willing to pose!

Shot with the 300/4 + 1.4 TC, with slight cropping.

High Key Spider
Saw this spider today while going in from the BBQ. He was facing down on the house wall. The angle was awkward, and I couldn't set up a tripod (no room), so I had to handhold; otherwise I would have stopped down even more (this was f/8, and almost 1:1 macro, so the depth of field is just about nothing!)

The background was just our boring tan vinyl siding, so I figured I would make it B&W.

(There were a bunch of non-nature shots, but I generally like these the best)

Cheers

Thanks all!

I am *so* lucky to live where I do... the Rockies are only a quick hour's drive! I guess there has to be some consolation for our 8 months of winter!

Cheers
