My shot from today:

Shadows on the Reservoir

After work I took a short (and very cold!) walk by Glenmore Reservoir, and the shadows of the surrounding trees cought my eye.

Quite an abstract composition, but I think it works. Very little PP other than cropping out branches on the edge of the frame and increasing the exposure / black levels (effectively increasing both contrast and saturation). Shot at f/9.5, ISO 100, 105mm on the 18-105 kit lens.

Thanks for all those who have responded so far. Even though I have been shooting for 5+ years now and can do the technical aspects in my sleep, I stil feel I am a newbie with composition, so any suggestions / comments are very much appreciated.

Cheers

I like the way the density and angle of the shadows pulls my eye up to the top right. That's a neat shot!

One from today:

The Wild Blue Yonder Mk 2
I decided to splurge for a new-to-me telephoto lens. After my 1% focus success rate on my last outing, I figured that if I wanted to shoot any moving wildlife, I would need to get auto focus. Luckily, I found a used 300/4 AF for a very reasonable price (and when I sell my existing manual focus f/2.8 lens, I hope to break even).

This time I got much better focus hit rates, even though I am still getting to learn the AF-C system. This shot is one of a handful that I am happy with (although most of the ones I didn't like this time were from composition, not focus issues). I believe that it is a Golden Eagle (either that, or a juvenile Bald Eagle, but juvenile Bald Eagles have bright yellow beaks). This shot was taken wide open; if I had stopped down to f/5.6 or so I would have gotten better overall sharpness, but this expedition was in large part trying to determine the performance of my new lens.

Oh, nice eagle! Sounds like the lens was a good choice.

Your photo is making my fingers twitch. May I make an attempt at editing it? I make no promises about anything...

Go for it, I just ask that you only post it in this thread. If you want I can even send you the original raw file... PM me your email address and I can send it (the file is 18.8 MB, if that is too much for your email account I can put it on my web server).

Cheers
