Description: The most compact and lightest in the history of fast zoom lenses. Thanks to the revolutionary downsizing "XR" technology employed by Tamron in the development of high-power zoom lenses such as the 28-200mm and 28-300mm, the dramatic compactness that makes this lens the world's smallest and lightest is achieved. Its compactness makes it look and feel like an ordinary standard zoom lens, yet the versatility that a fast constant maximum aperture offers will definitely reshape your photographic horizons.

Pros: Good size, very good image quality
Cons: Not quiet wide enough

I did intend to get the SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD but for some reason I walked out of the shop with the 28-75. Both were on my wish list.

This lens was supposed to be my main walk-about lens, however, it is not quiet wide enough to fill that roll alone and find myself swapping with a wide angle lens frequently. I am now thinking of getting the 17-50mm or something similar when I do not wish to take to much equipment with me.

The first copy of the lens I had froze. The zoom locked up while I was using it. Fortunately the second copy is fine.

Pros: 2.8 aperture, great general walkabout/portrait lens
Cons: a little noisy, wish it was a little wider

First, I am not a pro and cannot grade this product on its finer points (focusing accuracy/sharpness) but as an amateur I wanted to share my experience:

I needed faster glass to replace my D200's kit lens (18-70 3.5-4.5) but cannot afford the Nikon examples. I liked the 18-70 because of its fast, super-quiet focusing and good wide-to-medium range coverage, and excellent picture quality. But I felt a little limited in indoor/low light shooting.

After reading various online reviews and listening to my Wolf camera sales guy, I bought the Tamron, and I have not been let down.

What I lost in leaving the 18-70 as my walkabout lens: I am surprised how much I've missed the extra 10mm zoom at the wide end. Also, the focusing motor is a little noisier in the Tamron, but not obnoxious.

But what I gained using the 28-75 Tamron: The faster 2.8 aperture is available at all focal lengths, and the additional flexibility for indoor/low light situations was immediately apparent even at my amateur level. The price point is excellent, and the build quality is definitely adequate (I have some cheap and pro lenses to compare at home). I also appreciate the locking tab at the wide end of the zoom to prevent lens "creep" when shooting downwards.

Again I'm not qualified to comment on the fine points at other qualities such as sharpness/distortion at various focal lengths, but this lens has definitely delivered for me on what I bought it for.

Pros: Fast, relatively light, sharp
Cons: Can't think of any -- oh, doesn't have IS

I've owned the Canon L lenses and the Nikon equivalents. I prefer this one for both sharpness and light(er) weight. I have sold all of my zooms, except for this. Everything else I own is a prime lens. This is a keeper. I always advise against paying the price for the L/S equivalent of this lens. Just not worth it.

Pros: Sharp
Cons: Slow focusing

For its price, hard to beat. Love the sharpness but for in-door sports focusing is a tad slow.

Pros: Sharp, 2.8 throughout the range, good size
Cons: Not VC and not wide enough on a crop camera

I am enjoying this lens and I really appreciate the 2.8 at the long (75mm). Very good walk around and a very good portrait lens.
