Description: This lens is great for outdoor shooting with the exception of very low light. It's AF is fast and IQ is great IMHO! Indoors without flash, it performs inadequately(for me on a XSi body)IMHO IS is great for using the long end(300mm) and I have not found any soft images at the long end.

Description: Solid construction as typical of Canon L lenses. Very useful zoom range and the IS feature allows to take images in dim spaces such as cathedrals. Acceptable performance when combined with a Canon 5D and a 580 EX II Canon flash. When the lens is used with this flash, the zoom range of both are automatically matched. Only real shortfall I find with this lens is vignetting at f 4 that almost disappears by f 8. A similar fall-off occurs when used with the 580 EX II when the lens is set to f 8 and 24 mm. But in this situation, the fall-off is due to the Flash which really does not cover a full 24 mm lens angle of view. Focusing when used with the flash in dark areas is not always accurate.

Description: I hesitated for years about buying this lens. I have a 500 mm that seldom use do to its size and weight. I also used and considered the 400 mm 4.0 DO but passed on it due to the 300 mm f 2.8 opening and that when used with a 1.4X becomes a 420 mm f 4. The lens is about 7 pounds when used with the 1.4X and the 40D camera; found it quite easy to handhold for extended periods of time. Autofocus with the center sensor and AI servo allows for more succesful in focus captures than with the 100-400 IS and for that matter also the 70-200 f 2.8. As for sharpness and bouquet, it surpasses all my other Canon lenses. Highly recommended.
