Born in Heywood, Lancashire, UK. Moved first to just north of London as a teen, then in 1980 to South Africa. Have collected butterflies since age 5, had a long flirtation with motorbikes and motor racing, taking up photography after one too many crashes.
Discovered macro photography with an old F2 and a 55mm Micro Nikkor. Have had several Nikons and finally went digital with a D80. Co-wrote Living Butterflies of Southern Africa, published 1997, Umdaus Press. Co-wrote and edited Practical Guide to Butterflies and Moths, Lepidopterists' Society of Africa, 1993. Wrote Field Guide to Butterflies in South Africa, published Struik 2005, and What's That Butterfly?, Struik, to be published June 2008.
