Default Families At Weddings

Hello Everyone! I am new to this forum and am looking very forward talking shop with everyone. I am still a fairly new photographer and am currently hired to do a wedding. I have done weddings in the past, so I'm not really "green", but there is one area of the whole thing that gives me issues.

Taking pictures of the entire family.

There are tons of examples out on the internet and in books on how to compose a good looking wedding party (bride, groom, bride's maids and groom's men), but you hardly see any formal portraits of the families with the married couple. If anyone has any suggestions or examples I can find online, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!!!

Tessa

Do you mean something like this? This is bride and groom with her family.

This is tough with large groups sometimes. This group if I moved one person someone else moved. The one thing I did was use a tripod and a remote so I could move around a bit but in the end nothing was even or aligned like I wanted. But they loved the shot so I guess I was OK. This is only half the group there were more and we ended up taking about 50 pics of the groups shots. As you can see I have some people not fully visible and that really frustrated me but they just kept moving. I am glad I only do this occasionally, this one I was called the week before since they had not planed and could not get a full time pro on short notice. Plus these are in my opinion not very good but again they liked them. I will say this have you ever seen so much red hair and red on boths sides of the family.

I wish I could have done these outside in nice lighting but there was no where close to the chapel to do that. Jim

This is an unprocessed image which might show some of what you are asking......sorry about the compression artifacts....The main thing is that it is YOUR job to control the groups....and everything else too...and the people must LOOK HAPPY, as much as you can help them to be. No-one ever said this is easy...lol...cheers...Bob

James you could get those guys in front on thier knees, this would make them part of the group.
Great job as usual Heartseye, nice group shot & yes they are part of your job at a wedding.
Large groups are just a bunch fo little ones put together you start with your main subjects & build around from there.
Keep shooting Mitch

Thank you for the replies! It is hard to find good examples on the web, but these definitely give me a good starting ground. I'll try and post a couple either tomorrow night or Sunday night and perhaps I can get some critiques? Thanks again!

Look up Glen Dreeson. He has posing benches and videos of how to pose groups.
