Red face Laptop?

At a recent wedding of a friend I observed the photographer (the most popular and highest paid in the area) had a laptop teathered to the camera while shooting the formal photographs. Have any of you observed this or possibly done this yourself?

I haven't ever seen a wedding shooter tethered to a laptop, but I have seen them use Ipods abd Zune's for larger capacity and prevwiewing shots.

Bob,

That is interesting. Perhaps I am showing technical ignorance but how do they use the Ipod or a Zune? What I mean is how/when do they get the pics uploaded on the device? I have a Zune and my son has an Ipod... we both have to use the computer to upload images to the device.

If I remember reading my manual right or somewhere else I saw that my camera could be hooked up to a laptop. I have a Nikon D80. I remember thinking oh that may be useful in the future but for now my screen on my camera works just fine! I had to have a certain cord to hook them together if my memory serves me right.

When I do portraits and product shots, I shoot tethered. It's invaluable for checking focus and other fine details (closed eyes, reflections on eyeglasses, etc.) right there on the spot.

For Live Preview or for chimping, after exposure?

Chimping.

I've done this with school photos while feeding the photo into a database with all of the student info on it. Invaluable for catching closed eyes (or the dreaded half blink, which sometimes looks fine on a camera LCD).

I hadn't considered using the setup for weddings, though. I can see the value of it, especially if an assistant is available for reviewing while I'm shooting. I usually make up for misses by shooting three or four of the same pose. Statistically, it usually works out and, if the lighting doesn't change, a little post work can correct the odd blinker.
