thanks for posting the tutorial, although compared to your other tutorials it's a little light. But this could something subjective, as I'm coming from an IT background.

i have seen your tutorial on the internet. Like you i always backup my photo's. my personal way to do this goes like this.

1) i only use CF and SD cards up to 2GB (even though my camera's support more gb cards.
2) like you i also have many cards , i shoot them until the camera saids it is full, then i use a simply packard bell share and store 50GB device (photo tank without lcd) i put it in copy mode and i copy the images / photo's on the harddrive of the packard bell. when i am done with that after a day shooting i put the cards in my suitcase and do not use them until at home ( i carry 2 dlsr cams so i cannot take a laptop with me )
3) each card is labeled and i always take with me a small book and a pen to write down the places i have been and where i shot what pictures (nrs)
4) at home i hook up the packard bell image tank with build in sd/cf reader to my main pc and the images are copied to my photo and docmuents harddrive of 200gb , every month i make a backup on DVD (2 different brands) multiple cd's (two different brands) and on two external 320 gb harddrives .
5) like you i use internet for backup as well , mosaic i dont know yet but will try it out.. i usualy use the wrong named site of flickr and photobucket

and that is how i do it , if you act organised the chances of getting things wrong are less than a few Promile (1/1000 %) i have 6 cf cards (i use 5 of them for pictures and one small cf card ( and scd card ) only for customs sake whre i put in a few images to be able to show that both the dlsrs are working and there is no bonb or explosive in side.. never had a problem with the customs ..

Instead of an Epson P3000 I would get an iPod Touch with Camera Connector, because besides photo storage and viewing the iPod is also a music player, a video player, a portable hardisk, a web browser, and an email machine. 5 useful gadgets for the price of only 1!

But memory cards and backup devices can get lost, stolen, or even impounded (by shifty authorities; there's a lot of those outside the western world!). So if I have access to a broadband internet connection I upload the contents of my cards to a PC, then I join them together in an (password protected if required) archive or disk image and then send that via Podmailing.com, Yousendit.com, or Pando.com to my own email address at home. Then delete the photos from the PC, and erase the card to use it again. And again. And again.

So whatever may happen to my photo gear or cards or field storage device, my precious and IRREPLACEABLE photos are already safely back home!

Podmailing.com is FREE and allows transfer of unlimited numbers of files of unlimited size. I've transferred upto 6GB files without a hitch.

Yousendit.com is FREE upto 1GB/month with max 100MB per transfer.

Pando.com is FREE upto 1GB of files or folders per transfer.

And when on location or abroad I carry all the software I like to use on CD and DVD in my photo bag. Ready to install on the next PC I get to use but doesn't have it installed.

I enjoyed your tutorial.. However, I wonder if you find that transferring files from your camera to your notebook is faster and/or more error free than using a card reader to transfer the files to the notebook.

I will use a card reader, transfer my files to my notebook and then copy the files to two very small (in physical size) but large in capacity external hard drives. Only after I have assured myself that the files have been transferred correctly will I erase my CF cards...

I end up with my files copies to three different drives. It would be highly unlikely that all three would be corrupted. I also pack the hard drives in different areas of my luggage in case the luggage gets lost or damaged.

If you use a card reader to upload the contents of a full card to a laptop, you can continue shooting with your camera and another card at the same time. You can't do that if you upload directly from camera to laptop. That's very important for event/wedding togs, because the proceedings don't wait for the tog to catch up!

I don't know how many copies it takes to be safe. We dump the CF cards onto a desktop machine all through the day. The current event is copied to an external hard drive for transportation and archival and copied once again to a desk top at the office. These are not priceless images but we've got 9 years worth of images on a stack of external drives.
