Thank you Alex,

And yes, everyone can do with some Karma. (Though I'm not quite sure what it is used for.)

I have to say, I find your avatar a little disturbing, although, as a coder, I understand your sentiment.

Karma is used to say 'thank you' for an informative post or answer, or to say 'well done!' if someone posts a really nice image, etc, etc, it is the 'Camel' way to show someone you appreciate his/her's presence on the Camel

Let me know what you think.
Here's what I think:
The article to which you link is interesting and contains a number of helpful hints to the beginning photographer. Unfortunately it also contains a few rather egregious errors which may lead the beginner astray. Two such appear in the first section on aperture and depth of field:

Quote:
One stop is equal to half the diameter of the one preceding it. So when you close down one stop, you are halving the diameter of the aperture, and when you open up by one stop, you are doubling it.
When you close the aperture down one stop you are halving the AREA of the aperture, NOT the DIAMETER. The diameter is thus reduced by 70.7% (1/square root of 2). Most important to remember is that changing the aperture by one stop halves or doubles the amount of light which the aperture admits to the sensor.

Quote:
Finally, the depth of field on either side of the point on which the lens is focused are not equal. The area further from the camera which will remain in focus for any given f-stop is twice as large as the area nearer the lens.
"There is a persistent misconception among photographers that the rear DOF equals twice the front DOF. Although the rear DOF is never smaller than the front DOF, this statement is silly and misleading." (Paul vanWalree: Depth of field)

I haven't read any of the subsequent section and can only hope that they contain fewer such misstatements.

Cheers/Mike

It has now been expanded to include lighting, with one article discussing hard and soft lighting and another dealing with white balance and color temperature.

Hope the boss doesn't pass by my desk for the next few hours, because I'm going to be learning all about f-stops and color balance.
