I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. My question is after white balance is set......what do you do if you need to use flash?
Thanks for any help

I'm still not sure I follow.

To set a custom white balance with the 5D you need to take a photo of a spectrally neutral item under your lighting conditions and then go to the Custom White Balance menu to select that image, and then set your White Balance setting to Custom.

If you are using flash, take the photo of the gray card with the flash.

The important things are that the gray card be neutral (most photography gray cards are not color neutral, they are designed for exposure metering, not color balance). And that the gray card take up enough of the frame to not let extraneous items affect the custom white balance setting.

Another way to do it is whenever you change lighting conditions (add flash, the sun goes behind some clouds, move to a new location, etc.) take one frame with the gray card in it and use the white balance tool in your raw converter to set a new white balance for each series of photos as you work on them.
