Hi there... new to photocamel and also a newbie oh-so aspirant portrait photographer. I know it changes all the time re light etc but as a whole, say, under a canopy of trees.. which f stop and shutter speed would you use as the ultimate setting for shooting more than 1 person in order to get each member pin sharp?

Loving your tips Ben! Wow.. its awsome to find someone willing to share all their accumulated knowledge! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

A nice series of photos leading to a family potrait. I have now got some tips for my next family outdoor shoot that I will be doing soon.

Benji - I need to pose a family of four that consists of Mom, a daughter as tall as Mom and two boys 9 and 10. Should I pose Mom in the place of the Dad and daughter in the place of the Mom in your poses above?

Athena,

That sounds reasonable. Usually the person that is the head of the household should be the tallest in the photograph. This indicates to the viewer that this person is the guardian of the rest of the family and has their best interest at heart. This is why I seldom place a tall high school aged boy in that position in the image. Granted he may consider himself as the tallest and perhaps the smartest but as we all know in reality he isn't.

Benji

Great info. I have bookmarked this for future reference. I will be shooting a family of 4 this week. Only difference is that children are both boys. I will have to change up a few things, but this really gave me a great start. Nothing boring here. You did awesome. Thanks.
