Well made video, but for the pre-focusing segment, is there a reason you didn't go with using back button focus instead of having to flip the lens switch to MF? It's much quicker, you don't have to take your camera from your eye to fumble with a switch, and if you need to AF quickly, you just hit the back button and off you go.

Hi, thanks for the great comments!
Steve, with regard to back-button focus, I intentionally avoid that topic because I wanted this video to be accessible to beginners with any kind of DSLR camera, and I've found that back button focus is frighteningly complicated to many beginners, especially those who have cameras where it requires custom functions and inscrutable menu settings, etc. On the other hand, everyone can understand "switch your lens to manual focus." But I agree with you, that shooters interested in going to the next level should read their manual and learn about using back-button focus on their own camera. |

And not all cameras can be adapted for backbutton focussing. Apparently Canon and Nikon can but maybe that's all - and not everyone uses those brands. I have Sony because I used to run Minolta and was very disappointed when they closed down and transferred their technology to Sony. After my Minolta 600si got pinched I replaced it with a Sony a350 so I could continue using my old lenses etc.

Hi Phil thanks for the video it really made good simple sense to me especially since this area is one of my bug bears, i am over critical of my pictures and always think they are soft.
As an amateur all these bits of info are very valuable especially when its easy for the brain to absorb. Thank you! |

Great video, Steve, on a subject I still struggle with. So good that I checked out your site for more of the same... I also shared the link in the closed online classroom I'm in that is international in membership. Let me know if you get some requests from Australia, Iceland, the Netherlands, the UK, or Spain!
