Someone asked for a real world example. The pen tool is an incredible selection tool but there are many other methods for selecting that work well too. So I'll give an extreme example to demonstarte the power, that I challenge anyone to do as well and as quickly using any other method.
I had a client who wanted a logo and sent me a picture of an X that he wanted to use as part of it. The picture of the X was way too small to simply extract it and use it. It needed to be duplicated, here is the method I used. The last image shows the completed X that I turned into 3D for the logo. __________________

thanks for posting these tutorials hawkeye61. I have to agree, the pen tool is incredibly powerfull for selection, but as youv'e shown here it's also also great creation as well.
