How about a little pop-up that says
"Hey, you've made a lot of comments, but you haven't posted any pics lately" as a friendly reminder. I don't know after 250 or so comments? Discussion is great, and examples are better. It seems like it would be better to get critique from people who are also sharing their own "work." You know what I'm saying? I'll show you mine if you show me yours. __________________

Fran has a great idea. We have a few elitists who don't post pictures but leave very pompous, often degrading, remarks...yet never post images.

You know, I've wondered about that too. Whether the critique is harsh or not, it's nice to see that everybody can put the things they recommend into practice.
Once my dad was under the house working on some water pipes that were busted. A neighbor down the road came up and sat by the edge of the house giving Daddy all sorts of advice, telling him what he should be doing, how he was messing up, yada yada. Daddy finally said "When you get under here with me, then I'll do it your way." The neighbor got in his truck and went home. Willing to give advice, but not to show by example. That's what I thought of when I read this topic. Get under here with us, guys! ![]() Sis |

I like the harsh critiques but when I try to find some photos posted by the the poster I have no luck?
I love good photography so it would be a pleasure for me to see more of right or best way to shoot or post photos. What I really like is when a photo takes something normal or natural and makes it look fantastic or interesting. Just giving my thoughts. |

But I can tell you this, if I posted a fashion shot and got two responses and one was from Frank Doorhof and one was from someone whose work I hadn't seen, my tendency would be to give Frank's opinion a tad more credibility. ![]() The funny thing is, the really good, professional shooters who have nothing to prove are always the most polite and encouraging. ![]() |

Not a requirement. Just a pop-up or something like that. As it is you can check with the personal profile and "threads started" button. You can also check the person's website to see what sort of photog they are, but that ain't the same as welcoming critique for a shot. I don't remember seeing any websites that invite critique.
Though I have to admit I could warm to Max's idea. |

lol. Nope, I haven't seen that either Fran.
But even with a forum, as in any large community, you're gonna have people who want to stand back and throw stones under the protection of anonymity. Not much to be done about them but ignore. Maybe it's better to let people think you aren't so great than to post an image and prove it? ![]() |

You can't "force people" to post images. Sometimes, some people post images in "spurts" because they shoot in 'spurts". Sometimes, those "spurts" don't have anything worth posting in them.
You can't tell people to reply or comment on an image and include one to prove their worthiness either. Some don't have a similar shot as a reference, and all it really does is create a mini-contest or direct comparison between the two images. We don't need that. And besides, total post count will drop dramatically. You just have to accept the comments that are given. If a comment is totally rude, you report it via the tools in the left panel of every post. What would be better is if more people would actually comment and try to help the poster with their image, rather than look and go on their way. If everybody decided to comment on at least one or two extra images when they are one here, the whole place would be better off. |

Pehraps I am one of the guilty parties. I have considerable training and experience in portraitature. I took a long separation from photography and am now working in another photographic specialty. I've posted a very few images from horse shows. The crowd of professional equistrain photographers is pretty small here. I don't run across people who really know about the techinical end of shooting horses to either ask opinon of or give critique to, so why bother?
My ability to photograph horses and posting photos of them doesn't really give me any credibility to critique a family or baby portrait. I do have a passion for portraiture and have made it no secret that I am in transition in my life personally and professionally. I am taking small but very decided steps toward portraiture Having the opportunity to offer suggestions, for me, is beneficial. I can feel like I'm helping someone with their passion and I get the excercise of looking at elements and being reminded myself of the things that we might tend to let slip through the cracks. There are also a couple of highly accomplished portrait photographers among us who I hold in high esteem. Reading their opinons and suggestions is beneficial for me too. Its going to be months of hard work before I again begin photographing portraits. I plan on embracing the Camel community far into the future. I want to share my experiences as things unfold. I want to have a network of friendly folks involved in the areas where I need advice, and suggestions. And in the areas I can offer help I will in return. Its off my chest now, thanks y'all Steve |

I do mainly Night Club photography as my main work. Most people here did not like my 1st logo I posted so I am guessing no one would like the pics either hence not posting very many.

This was not meant as punitive thing. More of a self policing thing. Your tone conveys your opinion nicely. And I respect that, but I will stand by my suggestion that if you are posting your own pics then you would be more likely to offer critique that is both honest and encouraging.
If you value "every" post then I would respectfully submit that you haven't read every post. Certainly some of the ones that I specifically have in mind. Maybe you value them in a "free speech" kind of way. Yes I stand for free speech, hence I didn't say we should limit posts or censor them in any way. My suggestion was that a pop up come up after so many posts without their own pic. I didn't suggest a ban or a limit or anything like that. Every so often I make myself do some of the menial tasks that I expect of the people who answer to me so that I never lose sight of what it was like to be in there shoes. That is the nature of my suggestion and it's oK to disagree, but please don't ask me to "Stop this" I believe I have a right to my opinion same as you. |

Back on topic : You would like a sensible "comment to picture" ratio ? Excellent idea in theory ... but execution could be difficult. My idea would help as you can see the number of images in a person's "camel gallery" right next to their name - so if a person leaves a "robust" comment you can see if they have any images at all *or* if they are simply a "couch commando" ... The problem is "execution" - what if one of the state's best photographers wanders into this forum, let's say he has a bazillion published pics but they are hosted on his own website, if that website wasn't linked to in his signature we might assume he is a 14 year old "art critic" when in fact he is a real photographer... Which brings me to my next point : the person's age should be displayed - I'd sooner take strong advice from a grown-up than a youngster. I am a "n00b" myself but I am also a 31 year old computer tech so I know some things, whereas a teenager is ... well ... so "new to life" we probably should take their advice lightly, likewise we should advise them softly as they are young and we wouldn't want to turn them off to photography all together with strict critiques. So ... if you require a pic to post ratio you must accept links to websites and flikr and such in addition to the "camel gallery" ... Or you could be very strict and require the user to add his images to their "camel gallery" ... That couldn't hurt I 'spose ... Maybe enforce a 50 comment / 1 pic in the "camel gallery" ratio What ratio did you have in mind? Forcing people to use the "Camel gallery" is not that painful, I've used it and found it easy. I actually like that there is no "batch upload", each pic is carefully chosen and gets a comment. Cheers, Craig |

Hey, that's a great idea, Craig! I completely forgot about the gallery!
I think I'm gonna load some up over the next few days... I also want to add to what I said - when I say I'd like to see that everybody can put the things they recommend into practice, I should have also added that I don't say that with a negative implication, like I don't believe they can - more like "show us what you're talking about by posting a picture that you did this on and it worked." I love it here and want us all to be the best we can be, and to be supportive as much as we can. Sis __________________
