Default Mother and Child

The title just came to me when I found this carrot among are vegetable. Reminds me of a kangaroo with babe in pouch.

Caryl - I'm not sure about the composition nor have any suggestion. It certainly has that Mother and Child impression which I like. Was this from your garden? If so I would have liked to see it presented with the leaves intact.

Not from a garden. It was in a refrigerator drawer from the supermarket.

I like the warmth and the way you managed to capture the texture details in the carrot.

Would have been nice to include something else in the frame, but I'm not having a creative suggestion at the moment. I need my morning tea first.

Caryl,

I like the way that you are both creatively seeing and conveying the subject. I do like the shot, but think it would be even better if you could shoot it propped up against or on a wooden cutting board or something similar so that the orange does not look so stark against the black and appear to be floating in space.. Very creative way of looking at this object, Caryl....

I agree with Kat. I wish you'd re-think your decision to shoot everything on a black background. There are so many surfaces that you could use that would add texture, color, tonal gradation and provide a size relationship to your subject. By floating everything on black you're limiting yourself to a flat dimensionless image when you could be creating an interesting treatment and telling a story with both light and subject.

I do not shoot everything on black at all. My pot series will always be on black and, on occasion, other things. Take a look at my website and you will see.

I was referring to this quote of yours from your "Still life with pots thread"...

"I used black sheets as the background. I have set up a still life area with black sheets and studio lights so that all my still lifes will be on black backgrounds.
Caryl..'

In any case I'm glad to hear that not everything will be on black.

I was referring to the pot series. I am making a book of them.
