I'm back in Japan and almost out of boxes.
I even found my photo equipment box! I've enjoyed seeing your many entries. Nice work! Brooks' tutorial as always is informative and easy to follow. Thanks for your valuable contribution, Brooks. I must say though, doing still lifes are more than just fun. They are a great way to learn lighting, composition and graphic design. I was asked to take photos at the last camp and was very surpised to realize I was planning my shots like a "still life" people shot! I'm late to the party but here is my contribution for June's tool picture challenge. Wood carving is a very popular craft in Japan. There are many styles like Nikko bori and Kamakura bori. I've arranged some Japanese wood carving tools, a Japanese wooden mallet, and Japanese plane (Don would be interested to know it is pulled instead of pushed. There is greater control.) I used a 90 degree perspective this time. ![]() 20120629-002E 3x2 Thanks for your C&C. Jim |

Here's the setup using window light. Exposure was ISO 800, f/22 at .6 second. The reflector was white.

I like the lighting changes on your first shot better. The wall texture looks more interesting with the higher contrast of shadows. Perhaps you need to move the wrench away from the wall a little so you can use the reflector to see detail on the wrench. Jim |

This is not ready for prime time, but I am determined to make the deadline!
Same shot, processed differently. Window light from behind the subject, windows along the right-hand wall behind the camera for fill (probably should have used a reflector of some sort). The paper background has a "laid" finish, shown clearly in the portion magnified. I think vellum would have been better. Advice on whether I should clone out the reflections/refractions on the BG? |
