Having some fun with a frosted martini glass, some grass and some velvet.

Thanks Chris. I had the glass sitting on black velvet....draped from behind. I used a soft box on the right and diffused window light on the left. The glass itself was frosted.

Kate,
I love the shape of the martini glass but I'd like to see some tone on the background to play against the curves of the glass. For me a black background makes the shot look so unfinished. |

Kate, nice lighting. I have a problem lighting glass without a lot of reflections- something I have to work on.
Brooks, what color would you use for Kate's background? |

I wouldn't necessarily use a color preferring instead to add a neutral grey splash or slash of light behind the glass. Having some tone behind the subject adds another layer to the photograph giving the image a more three dimensional look. A completely black, or white for that matter, background has a two dimensional look and is not as interesting.

Brooks.. I love your suggestion and will try that next time I do a shoot like this. It would have to subtle so it doesn't distract...a darkish gray possibly.
The reflection issue was tough to work through. It took me a while to find just the right angles and I used tissue paper in the window as well to help diffuse the light. |

The splash of light on the background doesn't have to be much, just enough to provide some tone to separate the subject.
