Default Worst HS Lighting Yet!

Shot a game tonight at MJCA, in rain, and in the dark. The center of the field was actually visibly darker than the two ends. Ick!

These shots are all at ISO 12800. At least the rain helps to hide the noise!

I bet it does..Nothing like a good old dose of the other side of the fence

I really favor that 3rd shot in the series... I like the comp and the rain in the shot.. See the glass is half full after all.. You can use the rain artistically..

But how on earth do you keep from getting the rain spots on the lens? Inquiring minds want to now, or at least mine does..

Steve, did you have your stuff wrapped, or under an umbrella? I have done both, but a good garbage bag and some gaffers and rubber bands makes rain shooting less nerve wracking! Nice job on the high ISO.

I have one of those cheapo rain sleeves (2 pk for $3 or so) that I used. It has a drawstring for the end of the lens and a small hole that goes around the viewfinder (you take off the rubber eyepiece, fit the hole around the VF, then put the piece back on to hold it in place. I also had my lens hood on, which kept rain mostly off the lens glass, but it still got a few drops on it.

The guy shooting next to me had a umbrella he was shooting under. I guess that would be better, so you can use flash, which he was.

Two, three and four are real nice and crisp. Number five is as well. Much sharper than some of the other images you've been posting.

Three is a real keeper. Not ground-breaking peak action, but a good isolation shot, which people love. Fairly-clean background, good face. Sports information directors use this kind of shot a lot.

Outstanding for ISO 3200 and rain. I leave my stuff in the car if it's raining like that as mine is a hobby right now pursuing for something more.

Actually, these are ISO 12800. I removed the ISO 3200 shot as it was more appropriate in the people forum.

Thanks for the comments.

Using the Canon 50D. Shot in jpeg with standard in-camera noise reduction plus LR3's default NR setting of 25 on chrominance NR. Tweaked exposure and white balance and cropped / resized.

Not trying to start a debate(I promise). Why do you shoot jpeg instead of RAW? Speed, convenience? I probably shouldn't even ask this as this causes heated discussion. I have just gotten in a bad habit of shooting everything raw. Thanks for your time.

Wow, Steve! The more of your work I look at the more impressed I am with you. You've really got a masterful approach to all manner of obsticals. I've had a limited amount of experience in shooting in the rain, most of the outdoor folks I shoot chicken out in wet weather. I haven't ever liked the look of flash in rain. The drops reflect so much light they are generally more of a distraction than anything else in the images. Mr. Umbrella probably got pics that resemble shooting in a meteor shower more than a rain storm.

Well, I typically shoot sports in jpeg for buffer size, speed, smaller images (more on card / HDD, etc), easier/quicker processing. However, I did experiment this game and started on jpeg, but had forgotten I changed to sRAW part way through so some of these may have been RAW. I couldn't tell you which were which at the moment. The reason I switched mid-stream was the lighting was so bad, I could shoot manual exposure and go from under exposed to blown out too bright all in a burst sequence, so I switched to sRAW to give myself more latitude in fixing the exposure and white balance.

Anyway, On Thursday alone, I shot 2 college soccer matches and a HS football game...over 1100 pictures, all on one 8GB card (and one pair of batteries). I can't imagine how many cards I would have needed if I'd shot in RAW.

Non-sports stuff I usually shoot in RAW.

Thanks, Steve. I really didn't want to shoot this game because of the rain and only lasted about a quarter and a half. I only had my rain jacket and not the pants, so I was pretty wet when I left.

Mr. Umbrella is a local PJ, so I hope he knew what he was doing, but I haven't seen his shots. At least he didn't have it pointed up in the air with a diffuser over it this time!
