Probably a fun event to go and watch. The last one has me puzzled as to why one wing is pretty sharp and the other one is not. Would indicate a pretty small aperture....?

I was using shutter priority at 1/125, I thought it was an interesting result, especially when both wings were on the same focal plane, it could have been a result of not holding steady.

Likely not. Look at the flaps on the plane - one side is up, the other side down. The plane was doing some type of sprial maneuver. As you saw for yourself, these planes move and turn very very quickly. Tough shot to get completely sharp.

That is a brilliant observation Mad Dawg, one I had not looked for. You're right about the speed of their maneuvers.

Could it be that the far wing would appear to the camera to be "in motion" ie" it is moving away from the cam. The close wing is moving toward the cam and coming into focus.
None the less, a very intersting shot.
