My first post here - have a look.
2nd game for my son's Babe Ruth league team and I'm working to get my timing back after a long winter. I know the sales literature says these composite bats are supposed to flex, but I didn't expect to see this. Sorry for the oversaturation and blown red channel - photobucket did some evil things to my upload. ![]() __________________

Ken, Interesting theory (I had to google it as I'd never heard of it). Most references refer to slower shutter speeds and panning. This shot isn't panned and definitely not slow shutter speed. Then again, I'm not convinced I learned enough reading about to say that's not what it is either.

Appreciate the feedback guys.
It really is an interesting thought. I'm remember reading something about focal plane shutter distortion a long time ago, but I certainly don't know enough about it to speak intelligently on the subject. Do you think there would be other artifacts pointing to the distortion other than the bend in the handle - for example would you expect the barrel of the bat to appear elongated or foreshortened (depending on the direction of the bat travel vs the direction of the shutter travel) ? Any other time I would have looked at the capture and figured it was some strange optical illusion, but I've spent a good part of this spring reading up on all of the different baseball bat technologies (and getting over the shock of $400 bats). Composite bats are supposed to flex just before impacting the ball, then snap back as contact is made. I automatically assumed this is what I was seeing. The world may never know. ![]() Bruce |
