A high school baseball player, wearing what I called "working mans" gloves, opted to take a dive into 1st base.
Was it a wise choice? IMG_5630_800.jpg __________________

lol. Yeah, I'm thinking so. The ball looks far away but it comes in awfully hot! And that kid hit the ground too early. His hands are already on the ground, he's slowing down quick...
But I've been wrong before. Ask my wife. |

It's a proven fact that sliding results in a slower time to the bag - if you can overrun it, which is always the case at first after a hit. The only sliding into first should be from the other other direction, when a line drive is snagged out of the air by an infielder, or a pitcher or catcher makes a snap throw to first to catch a base runner leading off too far. In summery, the player is flat wrong, and even if he was safe, I'd yank him for a pinch runner that knew how run the bases, if he was one of my players. But I'm a tough-ass bench coach.

You see slides into first occasionally - usually its an outstandingly fast runner and he's trying to turn a sac bunt into a base hit. Another reason its taboo is the injury factor - cleats and flesh don't mix. The runner probably had success once, and it reinforced the bad behavior. The thing I don't get is how he got anything other than a bunt down with those gloves!
