Default "ARGHHHHH!!!!!!" Frustration, High School Football

Finally got to get some sports shooting in at the local high school.* Got to give my TC-20E a serious workout for once, and see some old colleagues.* I ended up lending a D70 to a friend for part of the game until she could get a working battery for her Digital Rebel.* I had only about 30 keepers (D'oh!), but it felt good to be back.* Also, I currently do't have sideline access in LA, so I need to stay sharp.

Saratoga's No. 84 and Jeff Frederickson express their frustration after No. 84 fails to complete a pass.

D2H, 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR with TC-20E 2x attached, @ 150mm (defeats the purpose of the TC-20E, LOL) and f/7.1 to preserve sharpness.

I tried cropping out No. 32 Frederickson, but I didn't like it as much as the original crop shown here.* I felt that his presence- mimicking No. 84's pose- added something to the image, and I don't think the AF had finished locking onto No. 84 when he dropped the ball, anyhow.* This breaks a number of the rules, including (1) tight cropping, and (2) thin DOF.* Still, I feel this was more interesting than a typical action shot.

Interesting image. I like it.

I agree, the wider DoF and looser crop is what makes this image. I only wish you got the feet of #84, I think that would have really emphasized that echo of emotion.

I actually don't think this breaks any rules, you ended up with a subject and a secondary subject. I think #32 provides some balance. Since there is not much distracting in the background, my eye is drawn to those bright orange uniforms - I'm not sure this would have worked as well with darker uniforms.

Interesting image. Thanks for showing it!

Cheers,
Ken

Thanks for the good feedback (naturally). Yeah, I wish I had gotten the feet, but oh well. I was probably expecting the ball to go to #32, as it had been for a good deal of the game before it.

Also, your comment on "bright orange uniforms" just reaffirmed the fact that my D2H doesn't like red, or I'm color blind and the uniforms are actually orange (LOL). I processed using Capture One, which gives a better red than ACR, and it looks pretty red on my somewhat-calibrated monitor, but... I guess not. Oh well.

FWIW, on my color calibrated monitor, the red has warmed up quite a bit so that it has shifted to orange (to my old eyes anyway)... truthfully, it is about halfway between red and orange - One caveate, this monitor has not been calibrated in several months and is should be calibrated again.

The other possibility is you have saturation goosed a bit too much, that can make red shift sometimes...

Cheers,
Ken

From looking at the shadows, it is late afternoon, early evening... setting sun, golden glow... it will turn reds, orange. The uniforms are just a bit overexposed, which cause a shift. If you look in the shadows on the leg of 84 you can see the red.

Nice shot BTW

Thanks for the feedback guys. My guess is the light, as I haven't adjusted saturation. I was setting my WB in-camera to emphasize the late afternoon light, but I guess it worked too well. LOL
