Default Sony H5 Focal Length

Can someone tell me what the focal length of the H5 covers as compared to a 18-200mm lens?

...that is pretty hard to do if we do not know on what camera body that 18-200mm lens is mounted, but I'll give it a shot:

The Sony H5 has a 6mm-72mm lens. In 35mm terms, on a FullFrame body, this translates to a 36mm - 432mm Field of View (FoV)

The 18-200mm lens obviously is a 18mm - 200mm FoV lens on a FullFrame body (Canon 1Ds series, 5D, Nikon D3), but mounted on a Canon 1D series body (1.3x crop factor) it would become a ~24mm - 260mm FoV lens, on a Nikon (most Nikons as only the D3 is FullFrame), Sony, Konica Minolta, Pentax, Samsung camerabody (1.5x crop factor) it would become a ~27mm - 300mm FoV lens, on a Canon xxD or xxxD body with 1.6x crop factor, the 18-200mm lens would become a ~28mm - 320mm FoV lens, and finally on an Olympus or Panasonic/Leica 4/3rds body (2.0x crop factor) it would become a 36mm - 400mm FoV lens...

...hope this helps some, *my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards!

OK

Sony H5: ~36mm - 432mm Field of View (FoV) lens,

Nikon D40X + 18-200mm : ~27mm - 300mm FoV lens

So your Nikon is a good bit wider, more wide-angle, but also a good bit shorter, less tele 'reach'...

Thanks!

So say I was to pick up a 70-300mm Nikon lens, would that have about the same "reach" as the Sony or would I have to get a Nikon lens that goes up to 400mm, which are pretty expensive. :-(

Multiply the lens (70-300) by the camera crop factor (Nikon = 1.5) and you get the FoV (135-450)

exactly, so the answer is yes, the Nikon 70-300(VR) will give you the same 'reach'/'FoV on the Tele-end' (450mm) as the Sony H5 (432mm)
