I figure imitation is a form of flattery, so I've taken inspiration from another photographer's (Joe L. at agoga.com) amazng post processing, including his frames and came up with these.

Good job. Just like in paper matte if you can match color with an element in the photograph it really helps tie it into a nice ensemble. fortunately with digital you can sample for an exact color. Nicely done.

Thanks. The challenge for me was to decide what color to sample.

I think you made good choices. Artsy folk see not only 3rds in composition but in color too. A primary, a trim and a highlight color. If you think in that direction I believe you "saw" the third color in these. Thank you for the Karma. Also, hello neighbor my home is north of Denton Co. Nice to see another N. Central Texan in the group.

I like, however personally I'd have the colour border much thinner as I think it detracts the eye a little when it's so thick.

How about with a little black gradient added to the color to tone it down? Does this solve the problem?

Some might find those bright bold borders a distraction or detract from the image. I'll go the other way for the particular kind of photos they are. The sport and fire dept. images are high energy and do not fight with the border for attention. The nature pic with its earthtones is better served with the one shown. Ya gotta match things up, just like high key / low key.
