Is It Worth It?

I have found a used Epson R2400 for sale. The asking price is $400.00 US. One year old and gently used is the claim. Is a used printer of this caliber worth this kind of asking price assuming it is in the condition as stated? I rarely see high quality printers listed for sale so do not have a good sense of what they sell for used. Thanks in advance

the epson 2400 is a sweet printer utilizing the k3 ink set! im a littel sceptical about the price, esp comming from an unknown 3rd party. i checked their site and it normally retails for over $800 US. at half price for about a year old i would be kind of wary. if you feel you can trust teh party selling it, it sounds like a good deal. one thing to consider is does it come with the ink set fully charged? if not you are looking at about another $100 for the set, (add another 10-15 if you want both the matte and photo blk). i would check out hte epson site. esp look at their clearance center, they have factory refurbs there for great prices and they come wiht full sets of ink too!! heck, a friend recently bought a refurbed r800 for like $200! so after the price of inks he got the printer for like $80! they offer a warentee with the erfurbs too so you should be in good shape if something goes wrong.

Seems if it's as advertised, it shoud be close to 600.00

I spoke with the seller yesterday evening. He strikes me as OK and appears to be serious about his photography as he decided to use his darkroom equipment instead of going down the digital printing path. There is one other individual in front of me so it may be a lost cause. I should hear from him Thursday and will go from there. I have been saving for a nice lens, so if this works out, I'll basically be starting over with the lens fund. Got to take advantage of opportunity while its there, so starting over isn't a big thing. Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Well, I had my chance to get this printer but passed. Just curious if you would have done the same. Printer had no sign of over use or abuse. It test printed fine. The thing that bothered me was this is the second owner wanting to sell after only 3 months. The first owner only had it about 1 year. For me to spend this kind of money for a new printer, then to only keep it a year would mean the printer was more trouble than its worth. Then owner #2 only keeping it 3 months seems even more odd. Am I a bit paranoid? I know these are solid units, but there are bad ones once in awhile aren't there? If I thought I could get repair insurance for it I would take the chance, but doubt it is available.

i htink you made a good chice in passing on this one. yes, these units are built to last and if the test prints came out fine im sure it was in decent working condition. im wondering why it would have changed hands so many times in a relatively short interval. one thing that spring to mind, and to which you alluded is that maybe they were more trouble than they were worth to the previous owners. a friend recently bought a high end epson and wasnt happy with it out fo the box. it made fine prints but he was expecting a lot more for what he paid. i spent some time with him talking about color management and even calibrated his monitor for him and it was then that he could see the light. he still ahd problems but they were more "user error" type things (forgetting to disable certain settings, wrong profiles. etc.) as with any high end electronic thingy there will always be a learning curve and if you dont have s guide (written or a friend) things can get kind of daunting. im also wondering about their expectations and patience to learn something new. like i said the 2400 is a great printer, esp if you are planning on printing B/W. maybe they tought by buying something really expensive (r at least moderately so) tehy would be able to get professional prints right off the bat. thats like saying if you buy expensive power tools you should be able to build a house. it takes time and effort to learn how to use these things to their fullest potential and im wondering if they were willing to invest that time. bottom line, is i think you did the right thing. if you still ahve your heart set on one, check out epsons web-site and keep your eyes pealed for any bargains! i can attest that the factory refurbs they offer are top grade and i would highly recomend giving them a good look (after your eyes recover from readin this lengthy post)
