I have done matting off and on since I was in high school (waaaaay back in the last century) But always used a single edge razor and a metel straight edge. Hands and eyes an not quite as good as they once were.
Any sugestions for a good quality matt cutter? __________________

Logan is probably one of the more popular brands. Logan Graphic Products, Inc.
Personally, I use a Fletcher but primarily because that's what was available at a local woodworking store and I received it as a gift years ago. It works fine for me but I don't know how it compares to others. The Fletcher-Terry Company |

I have a C&H and it's far better than anything else I've ever used. Before that I had a couple of the handheld cutters.

Are there any recommended online tutorials for matting? I'm about to start my first ever matte and a bit overwhelmed with the info out there.

Here's one Paul, though its for a hand cutter: Matting and Framing for Lazy-Ass Dummies.
Check the rest of this guy's site, he is very opinionated, but very interesting. |

I have used both Logan and V&H. From my experience, if you are cuttung a lot of mats, the C&H is hands down the best.
Paul, I have not checked lately, but Logan used to publish an excellent tutorial on cutting all different kinds of mats. I suspect that good tutorials are available from folks like Logan and C&H, and also from the board manufacturers like Bainbridge, Crescemnt Savage, etc. I do know that ten to twenty years ago there was no problem finding excellent and accurate material on this subject including the basics, the advanced and a bunch of stuff on creativity. I doubt that razor blades have changed little except for their cost, and oh yes, planned obsolescence. Tom |
