Default Canon PIXMA printers and pigment ink

I'm looking at this all in one Printer/scanner/copier/fax, the MP530, and I noticed it has both regular and pigment black ink. I can't find any explanation online for why it has both. Any ideas? I saw one today at CompUSA and they looked interesting.

thanks for any input!
Bob

I believe it is a 4 "color" ink printer. For color photos, it uses a "typical" 3 color tank arrangement (CLI-8C, M, Y), plus a black tank (CLI-8Bk - for better blacks, I presume).

For text printing, copying/scanning and receiving faxes, it would use the black pigment ink tank (PGI-5), which is larger than the others, and presumably less expensive per page.

So pigment ink is cheaper per page then? That would make sense. It confused me because I thought the pigment ink would be better for printing photos, but the color ones were just regular dye inks.

The printer is tempting at $199!

Have you looked at the HP OfficeJet Pro L7780? I'm thinking of purchasing this one.
