Default Printer choice, help!

I am helping my boss setup a small digital based portrait studio and am currently trying to decide which printer to go for. We need the printer to print the portrait's but also to offer local businesses with low cost advertising material.

I have been looking at the HP Designjet 800 but am wondering if it is suitable to print the studio shots on?

Would we be better getting two printers i.e. one for the studio portraits Canon/Epson and a seperate large format like the HP?

I would say you want 2 printers, but you might want to supply an idea of how much he is gonna spend too.

He hasn't given me an exact figure but he is happy to spend in the region of £2000.00 for the large
format printer alone, if thats any help.

...that might be better, but far more costly, because then you would have to maintain two ink-systems.

Also it is almost inevitable, that you get minor colour variations between a (8 or 12)inksystem Epson/Canon printer and the HP DesignJet 800 printer, as the DesignJet 800 only has a 4 inksystem...

Also, the Designjet 800 runs for $/€6500-8500, a bit more than theh GBP2000 ($/€ 3000) than your boss wants to spend...

For photoquality, you would have to 'divert' to the new 8-inksystem DesignJet Z2100 series, $/€ 3000 for the 24inch model, $/6000 for the 44inch model...

You just might be better off with one higher quality 'midsize' printer, for instance the new Canon iPF5000 17inch model, which gets very good reviews around the web ($/€ 3000)

as always, it depends on your needs (how wide do you have to print ?) and your (bosses) budget , and all the above is just *my* €0.02 worth...

My kindest regards,

Max@Home
