Default Self Portrait

Well, here it is, the first portrait to show that my home made mini studio is up and running, obviously, it's me :/

Interesting and a bit unconventional.

On the negative side while the eyes and hair are sharp as a tack the skin is fuzzy and blotchy. That is a sign of bad skin retouching.

Retouching is an art that takes lots of practice to learn. For fashion plastic skin is still preferred but for portraiture the pendulum has swung back so that leaving some texture in the skin is preferred.

You might want to pick up a copy of this book.

Thank you guys, you are more than right about the skin, it is a ball ache! That's why I'm practicing on myself, I have bad skin and don't want to offend anyone!

You can build up a catalog of skin textures and clone them onto skin that has been completely smoothed out.

It isn't something I would normally recommend but you can totally smooth out the skin then add artificial pores using the Photoshop Add Noise and Emboss filters. Different areas of the skin have different pore structures so you should do this for each skin region.

Here is the technique, adopted from one using a sand texture by Eye Designz Photography on ModelMayhem. I use the Noise filter since the sand texture is no longer in CS6.

ModelMayhem.com - Creating Fake Skin Pores

- Add new layer
- Edit>Fill>50% Grey
- go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise
- At the appropriate zoom for the image set the Amount.
- click OK
- go to Filter>Style>Emboss
- Choose Light direction (angle), Height and Amount.
- click OK
Change blending option to overlay or soft light
Create black mask
with an average size brush and color at grey (mid tone) Opacity at 100%
brush in the sandpaper texture to where you want it. Change the brush color to white to show all or black (or dark grey) to show none or minimal.

Note: It is important to match the new texture with the same size texture of the pores to make it believable. Usually images that are soft will show very little pores to begin with. this method works when used sparingly.

You can also build up a catalog of skin textures and clone them onto skin that has been completely smoothed out.

Wow, just wow, thank you, and thank you for a great link!

Much to do now, much to do!
