Yeah, and as I look through it, there's a lot of poses that would get killed here on the camel. with cut off appendages etc. Those darn rule breakers!!

I think that is the biggest frustration with attempting many of the poses--what to do with all those appendages.... Now that we are trying to move beyond the headshots, and include shoulders and torso, well, those pesky arms get in the way!! I just can't get a cut off arm to look acceptable for me--Poor Sarah will pose and pose, and I will shoot for a good hour, and I end up deleting all the images because I don't like the looks of her arms/hands--much to her chagrine...it's hard work to be a model! ;o) |

Compose broader maybe?
This is a real opportunity for those here that know how to post to critique your composition and posing, so we'll all learn. I agree with the where to crop an appendege. It's hard and while I can spit out a few rules (not at joints etc etc) it is hard to make them look good. Keep it up. |

I'm not quitting this fun project any time soon, unless my model goes on strike, it's just that life is busy, and getting at least an hour or so of shoot time is easier some days than others...so the posts may be frequent some times, and very slow on others... ![]() |

On the first one your daughter looks really beautiful. I love her cheeks and the light on her face is striking.
I think the last one is stunning. Just get rid of the earrings and the image is just perfect (at least imo). Good work for both of you and have fun |

The final....I wonder--does it look like my little model is getting tired of posing? ![]() |

As an occasional portrait shooter . . .I love this thread. Very interesting.
If I read this right the young model is your daughter...She is a great subject and very photogenic. Look forward to following this thread. Well done so far. |

Mikkic - first let me agree with you; you have a photogenic daughter!
Second, let me say that I don't do C&C too well, except on my own work where I am ruthlessly brutal. If I have a criticism it would be over immitating book poses regardless of how cool they may appear - IMO your second portrait has a vitality, freshness and honesty that makes me feel as your subject does - I just have to smile right back at her. I think good portraiture is inspirational, "a spark of creativity" as you say, and uncontrived. For me, the most memorable portraits are un self conscious in their depiction of real emotions, positive or negative or in between - images that compel empathy, but not indifference. |

Kudos to you for trying to do this - and double to your daughter for being the subject. Thanks for doing these.

![]() as time goes on, we are 'copying' the book a little less and merely using it as inspiration...we'll go through and find a pose, but then as we are pursuing it, we end up with our own version. That was my goal all along--to be able to come up with my own visions when working with people, not just sitting them or standing them and shooting. I still have a long way tot go, as I just had a shoot of four people and I totally forgot to look at their poses, I was just worried about the lighting (it was outside) After I got the images home, the exposure was great, but one of the men was standing there very awkwardly. I will reshoot... ![]() |

Mikkic, you are growing as you try these new poses. It is not to just copy them, but to begin to see where you can modify the images and make them your own. It all comes with more experience in shooting. Keep up the great work.

Really nice. Maybe a fill light or closer reflector to have less of a ratio and to get more shadow detail.
DOing good. |

That last one is a fantastic shot. the colour and sharpness are spot on. if I have one very slight niggle, it's the edge of the ear on the far side seems to be outside the edge line of the cheek.
What a great collection of images you are building up though And to have such a willing model is amazing!Well done to you both. regards jim |
