Except for no. 3 – as was already mentioned – and the wonky WB in the first 3 (I agree with sonshine there), your light set ups look exemplary and you seem to have to good working m.o. for your PP. Your model is plain gorgeous. Fine bone structure, and she seems born to be in front of a camera. Very photogenic indeed. The 9th post revealed where she got it.

Looking forward to your postings from this oddyssee (BTW: did I miss poses 5 through 14?).

Very kind words...gotta be careful about letting her reaad these comments, or I won't be able to fit her big head in the viewfinder!

We don't like all the poses, I'm just kind of picking and choosing which ones are doable with the resources at hand and which ones she thinks she can try...I mean, really '500' !? ...it's a rather daunting challenge, even if I can skip some, I may go back and pick up a few more as we go through the book if we aren't sick to death of the process.

Wow! Thanks so much for the kind words! That's so encouraging...

As I said in one of my earlier posts, this book is not only a posing book, but also a lighting book! #4 took me many tries to get the lighting in the ball park...

For the BG, I am using a white roller shade I picked up at Wally's, and I made a kaliedascope (sp?) with black paper by cutting holes in it and taping over the holes the corners I robbed off of each color of my gels (Making sure I left enough to still use them whole) Then I had a hair light in a long grid from behind, and a softbox camera right with a large reflector camera left...

AS you said this is a learning process for you. Since you are shooting in Jpeg....are you working with the White Balance on auto or manual? I too have the E-3 and have found that when working with studio lighting, you need to switch the W/B to manual and set it to daylight (5400 K) so that the gels and flash will stay stabilised. The angles of the other images are more interesting.
To work square to the lens adds width and not to mention take away from the subject. The 4th is getting there, just need to tweek your lighting better. Look at the catch lights in the eyes....or the lack of them in some.

Thank you for taking the time to comment...Actually, I do use manual WB, the shots were all over the map when I didn't, although I recently set mine to 5800 K, because I like a little bit more warmth in my images...

Okay, now somebody out there will see this and know exactly what I am going for...but it is not quite there...her skin should be a white value of about 250....I just can't seem to get it there without mottling and messing up the shadows, which I would like to be a value of around 15... If anyone has the book I am working from, the effect is on plates 18 and 19....

Using a meter will allow you to measure the light in the highlight AND shadow areas. Using Ps is not where you want to be editing the images. Get it closer in camera.

That depends on the ratio you are looking for.

Also remember that getting your light closer to the subject will mean more light fall off so more contrast (darker shadow).

I'm no expert though - experiment with your eyes but a meter will help get the right exposure every time.

Edit
If you respond it may take me a few days tpo get back Off on a wee trip to London so need to get some sleep!! Up early (it's 1am here)!

Keep up the great work.

Spark of creativity #2 and #3...When trying a pose that is not working out for whatever reason, I hate to waste the wardrobe and lighting time, so I see what I can come up with on my own...

The third one is a rework of pose #15--Sarah likes this one, and the newest High key...

Doing great.
Watch the nose shadow blocking light to the other eye like in the first one right above here.
But you 're doing great!!

The image in your post #31 is fabulous as far as the angle, her expression, and her pose go. Confirms everything I said earlier.
Of course the burnt out parts are unfortunate. That is much better in the image in your post #37!

Well, eos said it, and he/she is right! Use a meter and get it right in-camera if you can, in PP only if you must.

And you don't need a separate (expensive) handheld light meter! You have a spot meter in your cam! Bought and paid for. So use it!
