OK, I went out on the patio with my tripod, flash, camera and child...I didn't have any light to find him in the dark for focusing except what the flash emits....these are hit or miss but fun. The porch roof is white so I didn't like the ones that I bounced off it. I then held the flash in my hand low and pointed towards the ground for these.
![]() The only difference between this one and the one above was he had changed clothes....I had to up the FE to get better lighting, I don't understand why that was. ![]() And this one...well, he's just special! ![]() __________________

I've been playing with photos at dusk and I think you did well, but I have a ton of learning yet. I really like the expression captured in #3
I hear ya on the focus thing in low light, isn't that just annoying? I wonder what the key to that is. I keep telling the camera to focus focus focus and than my daughter looks at me weird for talking to the camera. It's hard to repeat dusk shots as each day the time changes for sunsets and than if the clouds are heavy or light, it changes it all again. I do love the look of the dusk/night shots. I guess practice, practice and practice. Here my first tries at it: My first attempt here, but I had the flash too low to ground - single vivitar 285hv ![]() my second attempt using my white lightnings ![]() Sad part now, fall is moving in so winter is coming shortly, which mean no more practicing. Pass on any tips and tricks ya pick up tho as I am interested in this a lot. |

Thank you all....
wolfden, the main difference between your and my photos is that I didn't do these at dusk. It was completely dark outside when I had the whim to go out back and shoot. It was more for fun than anything serious. I do have plans though to get out at dusk and try my hand at it. I think that will have to wait until I get my flash completely off camera. Right now, I'm still using the small cord so there's not too much room to position the light anyplace. |

Hi Lori. I love love love the first one! Great pose and lighting. The second one could be a modern book cover for "The Invisible Man"...kinda wild looking! And the playfulness of the last one shows how much fun you all had together taking these. Nice work, my friend.

Wolfden, I would suggest gelling your lights with a bit-o-CTO to warm them up - the color would blend better with natural light at dusk.
