More practice with camera mounted flash

Just playing around with the Quantaray QTB5000 mounted on the camera. I have the bounce flash pointed to the wall/ceiling behind me. The fill flash was set to TTL but honestly it didn't look like the 40D recognizes it. I had to take some test shots and adjusted accordingly.

It's probably not noticeable at this size but the catchlights are from the combination of the 2 flashes and are not from PP, though you can tell that they are right smack in the middle. I still like it (bias I know) but is it weird to have the huge catchlights in the middle?

Emma got a birthday check from the gramps and they were just goofing around in #2 and #3. I fired quick and forgot to adjust the DOF. Oh, the pose in #1 was not my idea.

Tom - I absolutely LOVE #1. That one would be on my desk in a frame, if it was me.

As far as the lighting, Tom, I think it looks pretty cool - the catchlights are not teensy pin lights and look much better, as far as I'm concerned. The only thing I noticed was your white balance seems off a bit.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised since there's a combination of light temp in the room, plus the wall color and I didn't make any WB adjustment. How bad would you say, Sis?

About the white balance - I don't think it's really really bad, but a bit toward the yellowish side?

Here's a quick edit - I think I may have the reds too saturated here, but the yellows have been decreased.

Thanks for the edit, Sis. I always appreciate having things point out so I can improve. The yellow cast makes very much sense with that wall and the tungsten lighting in the room. I didn't do any custom WB on camera and certainly didn't do much in post...which is my weakest area I feel.

In our house we joke that the color of the girl's skin should be called brellow for the combination of yellow and brown.

LOL about the brellow! But the yellow is too much in that first one even for brellow, lol - the teeth have a little bit of yellow cast and when I clicked on the white sleeve, it had a yellow tint too.

Your girls have lovely skin - and eyes - and hair - and noses - shoot, they are just pretty as pictures.

Wow, it's those cute kids from that good looking family again!!!!

#1 is a great pic.

There's no obvious blow-outs in any of the pics. Exposure wise, they are very nice. Perhaps a couple of DOF issues with #2 and #3 but I get the impression you were concentrating more on the lighting anyway.

oh #1 is just precious and priceless! what perfect faces. love the pose, love the composition. i do think they look a little "flashy" (like you stated with the center catchlight) but still love them!
