I worked on this one too. Here's what I came up with. If I'm out of line I'll take it down. First I opened your original file, changed the profile and adjusted the background back near as my eyes allow to the original colors. Lassoed (is that a word?) the eyes the Ctrl+J to make them a layer of their own (this helps keep from seeing crazy results on the whole image). Sharpened, the used hue and saturation to take down the reds and yellows in the eyes. Tried to bring up the iris colors but with limited success (man he's got dark eyes). Once done I hid the adjustments in a mask. Used a small medium pressure brush at 97% opacity and carefully painted the adjusted effect of just the eyeballs. Is this any good?

Thank's MoJo. I don't know how it would print at its current resolution either. As much as I appreciate the compliment, please don't think I jumped on this as a compition. No way was I trying to one-up anyone else. The Camel has proved invaluable to me as a learning and sharing tool. When I joined this forum I knew nothing about Photoshop and precious little about digital. I see challanges [not of the contest type] people face in PP and wonder to myself how they can be met. It feels pretty darn good when the light begins to flicker and an idea actually works. So thanks for the compliment and remember a portion of the thanks goes to the folks who freely share ideas and knowledge.

Thanks everyone for all of the help with the dark image problem. I think I discovered what was going wrong.

After the comment about the "uncalibrated" color space mentioned above I started checking. My camera (D200) is set to sRGB and the RAW files from the camera load into Adobe Camera Raw as sRGB. After working on them in Photo Shop and adding the fog the PSD and JPEG files appear to take on a different profile called ProPhotoRGB.

The working color space in Photo Shop is set to sRGB (I think anyway), but it appears to save PSD and JPEG files in the ProPhotoRGB profile. Can anyone shed some light on what setting I am missing in Photo Shop that is causing this?

The photo attached below looks like what I see on my monitor when viewed in PS or as a JPEG with the Windows Picture Viewer.

Now I need to work on it to enhance the eyes utilizing your techniques. I also need to up the contrast and saturation a bit too after looking at Songman's edit.

I don't know how you got it into ProPhoto RGB either. When I copied the file that's how it came across and looked fine in PS. Aparently web browsers don't deal with that too well. When I assigned the image a working sRGB profile it looked very nearly like the original as posted on the web. I don't know what quirk PS has in going into ProPhot RGB with converted RAW files. Someone who's well versed, I'm sure will chime in on this one. There's gotta be a prefrence setting somewhere that assigns or converts the color space.

I like the idea but, I'd rather see the smoke coming from a football or something like that...not to sound crude but, to me with the smoke as it is it looks like he had "bad chili."

Thanks for that Lori. I just had bad, bad [no kidding, it was awful] chili for dinner. I like the smoke, its got the drama of WWF going for it.

For sure. I'll want to get away from myself too, I"m sure. Who makes chili without first browning the meat and draining the grease and fat off it? I mean besides my uncle.
