Here is one of a third grader. They are all going to look about like that.

This little girl, who is called "the Weasel" came to my daughter's birthday party tonight. (Gracie wanted to have a late birthday party so she could invite friends to see Beverly Hills Chihuahua). So we have a whole bunch of little girls (including the Weasel and Gracie) setting at one big table outside at the Mellow Mushroom (pizza place). There was a young couple sitting inside directly across from all the little girls. One of them - and we never found out who - had the bright idea to write a note to them and hold it up against the glass for them to see. It said, "You love each other. Kiss each other." All of the men found it funny, but all the women were livid. I'm secretly hoping it was daughter's idea.

OK, let me get this out of the way, first...ROFL! I would have sided with the men! That is TOO funny!

Now - the portrait. Mojo, it's just about dadgum perfect. Wow. You are so GOOD. The one and only thing I'd suggest is to use whatever method you use to brighten, and apply it to the teeth just a little bit.

Again...wow. I'm impressed. Very much.

Her Daddy gave her that nickname. It's because she's sneaky like a Weasel. Thanks for the K.

I noticed her teeth might could use some work and I might clone out the hairs on the right side of the image too.

Nice clean image Mojo. Well done. Hair is perfectly lit. On the face it might be a tad flat but that's no problem with kids at all.

Athena, I used two AB800s. The main used a 47 inch octabox and was at a 45 degree angle camera right metered at f/8. The fill was slightly left of camera up high with a 35 inch octabox metered at f/5.6. Good luck next month.

I sometimes think that professional photographers that do student yearbook photos mostly hurry through it and don't take a lot of time. In one little girl's case I took nearly twenty images before I got one I liked. And since I am an amateur and the school is small, I can afford to spend some extra time in photoshop.

I turn down offers to do a lot of stuff (due to time and an aversion to having to please someone else), but I don't mind doing this school. It's small and I know just about everybody there. So just find you a nice small private school and have a go at it.

Thanks Fran. We have to have church directory pictures taken this weekend by Olan Mills. I tried to get out of it because I think they are hacks, but my wife will not let me. But I have made her promise not to buy anything from them. I looked through our last church directory and they had people posed square to the camera, reflections in glasses. Not saying I'm a pro, but I at least try to do better than that.

Thanks Kelly. Don't you wish you had bought that Vagabond sooner. It's just so handy and allows you to use lighting in places that would otherwise be impossible.

I wish you were doing the pictures at my kids school. Not only are yours lit well they are actually sharp. Good job.

Two things Mojo. Number 1 that pic is TACK sharp! You better warn parents cuase they'll cut there hands handling the prints.

2) Great job with the glasses. You have just an edge of your fill just barley in there, but would only be noticed by other nit picker photogs like me.

I think if you did a little work on her teeth, her parents would appreciate it. Great work!

Awesome work with the glasses

People with glasses are some of the hardest to light.

Thanks. The funny thing is I used the Nikon 18-200 mm VR lens. Now a lens like that shouldn't be that sharp, but having used for for several months, I knew that shooting around f/8 and around 100-135mm (somewhere in there) that is was more than capable.

Thanks. I also noticed the little rim around the glasses. I had her head posed where there was no reflection, but I think she moved.
