Nice balance of flash and ambient light. Don't like the hot spot on her cheek. IMHO you should have moved the light to the camera left as the right side of her face is in shadows. The catch light tells me the flash is too low. I would raise it and move it.

Thanks for the tip. It is a little dark on the right side of her face. And to be honest, I don't know why I put the flash so low.

Along with Al, I would sggest a flash bounced or 'skimmed' at 45 degrees from an umbrella, or large WHITE CARD around to the subject's right - our left - side. Maybe that would cut down on the glare spot on the cheek.

If you had enough light an unstitched WHITE PILLOW CASE or similar may work as a light reflector. or over the flash head as a light diffuser.

Never thought about using a pillow case before

Definitely need some work with the hot spots. Thanks for the tips!

My suggestion is to turn her toward the main light source. The other suggestions are great as well. Thanks for sharing.

An ustitched WHITE PILLOW CASE can be used in two ways - as a REFLECTOR but also - in some cases - as a light diffuser - to soften a subject. Not bad for a simple item like that.

Agree re the hotspot and the various suggestions to imrpove the direction and quality of the light source - but it is a very nice portrait.

Like the pillow case idea Norm! (I'm "the other Al"!).

Al

My thanks for supporting the PILLOW CASE. With some testing it can work quite well - considering the price. If you need something larger - try a bed sheet. That is a bit too big for me - but who knows for someone else.

I've used a bed sheet for an indoor shoot before. Works out pretty well.
