I don't know....I'm so confused....Jim makes some excellent points. The leading lines now do take you to the subject...the eye flows from the tungsten to the subject in a L2R American orientation.....
But I shot the shot the way I shot it because I thought that is the way the shot should be shot. (I really just wanted to see how many times I could say shot in one sentence.) But truthfully, it is hard for me to divorce myself from the original. Woe is me. __________________

Sis - not necessarily "the rules" as much as what draws the viewer into the image focusing the greatest amount of attention on the subject.
Kelly - Sorry bud. Didn't mean to cause you grief and/or confusion. Just call them the way I see them. |

When we read something (in English anyway) we start at the left top and read across. In portraiture we want to see the face and we want to see it immediately without any encumbrances. By having the subject facing the left side of the image our eyes easily slip into the composition and "read" it. When the subject has his or her back to the left side we have to, with our eyes, "jump over" him or her to get to what we want to see, the face. The faster we can get to the face the better we feel about the image.

Benji, you make an excellent point. The flipped version is growing on me more and more. I understand that in the American psyche, the lower right corner would be the power corner...and that the face looking towards the left of the image also makes a more pleasing portrait because of the way our eyes flow (in the west...that is). It make sense to me now.
Thanks Tom. I will always be learning and growing and trying to improve. Johnny...yeah...you should see me on a shoot. I get very excited, react to the subject...HOLD IT...THERE....PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate it when I say....THERE!....PERFECT!....Now drop your chin just a bit.... |

Kelly, besides the fact that the numbers on the shirt are reversed, I would say that Cole will prefer the flipped version, because it is a mirror image of his face (the way he would ordinarily see it) but his father will prefer the original because it "looks like Cole." No one has an absolutely symmetrical face, and Cole's is certainly not. Whatever flipping does for composition, it makes the young man in the picture look like someone other than Cole.

also on the point of the reversed image not being what the dad is use to seeing... but he may like it better because that's what he is use to seeing in the mirror. |

Kelly,
What about toning the tungsten light down slightly so it isn't quite so hot? I tried it and like it better in the original image. I think the tungsten is just a little hot and that is why it is drawing your eye. I like the image a lot and think if you change the density of the tungsten you will like it better. I am a little confused about what the "FLR technique" is? Can you explain what you mean there? Quote:

FLR...I first read about it in "The Joy of Photography" when I was 18 years old. Zoom in on the subject, focus, recompose the image.
I will try to tone down the tungsten. You are welcome to post your edit. |
