Default 2 year old

Morgan's 2 year old portrait.
Took every bit of 10 minutes and about 20 frames.

When you get the right one, you just know it.

Thanks guys..

Set up is pretty straightforward.

2x3 softbox to the right....2x3 white foam reflector to the left, hairlight, kicker to the right and behind subject, (although I could have done away with this light completely, doesn't work as well with subjects wearing lighter clothing).

You really nailed her expression. I'm sure the parents were delighted. Her personality comes thru perfectly. It just shows how well the photographer is communicating with the subject.

Small nit is that the light appears to be a bit high, creating a longer shadow on the other side. Also, while the background is well-coordinated with the subject's clothes, I don't care for the wrinkled muslin look. I agree with you re the minimal effect of the kicker (and hair light). Also can be difficult to control with young subjects as they tend to move alot.

These are small issues, as the expression is what's important here.
